KIDS HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT | CARTOON CUTS

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 11, 2010 - Cartoon Cuts is pleased to join forces with A Matter of Trust in their efforts to clean up the giant Gulf Oil Spill.  Cartoon Cuts is collecting all of the hair clippings from its 15 locations on the East Coast and is shipping the boxes to A Matter of Trust.  Matter of Trust is providing a safe, non-toxic, and effective way to participate in the Gulf Spill cleanup. Donors from every state in the US, from Canada and beyond are sending in hair, fur and wool clippings as well as nylons and funding for the outer mesh. These fibers and tubing are used to make Booms that can protect beaches and coastal waters.

As much as 210,000 gallons of oil have been spilling into the Gulf of Mexico each day since the April 20 explosion.  One pound of hair can absorb approximately one pound of oil, in about one minute.  The hair will be stuffed into six-foot long, sausage-shaped “booms” which can be used to absorb oil along the coast and protect the beaches and coastal waters being impacted by the spill.

Kathleen Perkal, founder of Cartoon Cuts, noted, “It is a wonderful way for children to become aware of an environmental issue, and to get involved in a solution.  There is a video they can view that explains the process.  It shows how quickly oil is absorbed by hair.   You shampoo your hair because it collects oil, so why not use hair to clean up the oil spill?”
